About senior dentistry

More older adults keep their natural teeth today than ever before, which is good news. It also means new kinds of care. As gums slowly pull back with age, the root surfaces of teeth are exposed. Roots are softer than enamel, so cavities can form there quickly, often along the gum line where they are hard to see.

Many common medicines, including some for blood pressure, depression, allergies and bladder control, reduce saliva. Saliva rinses away food and helps protect teeth, so a dry mouth raises the risk of decay, gum problems and sore spots under dentures. Your dentist will ask about your medicines and may suggest high-fluoride toothpaste, saliva substitutes or more frequent cleanings.

We also check how your dentures or partials fit, look closely at the soft tissues of your mouth for any changes, and consider things like arthritis that can make brushing harder. A thicker toothbrush handle or an electric brush can make a real difference. If a family member or caregiver helps with your care, they are welcome to join the conversation. Together, we can plan care that fits your health and routine.

Cost and coverage

Senior dental fees depend on the care you need, from a checkup to a new denture. The ODA suggested fee guide is commonly used as a reference in Ontario. Some retirees still have coverage through a former employer or a private plan. Many seniors may also qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), so please ask our team how CDCP could apply to your treatment here. LendCare payment plans can help spread the cost of larger work.

Our promise: we confirm your coverage and explain the cost before treatment.

Senior Dentistry FAQ

Do I still need checkups if I have full dentures?

Yes. Your dentist checks the fit of your dentures and looks at your gums, tongue and the rest of your mouth for sores or other changes. As the jawbone changes over time, dentures often need adjusting or relining.

Why do I get cavities now when I never did before?

Gum recession and dry mouth are common reasons. Exposed roots decay more easily than enamel, and less saliva means less natural protection. Your dentist may suggest a high-fluoride toothpaste or varnish.

Can I have dental work if I take blood thinners?

Usually, yes, but tell us about every medicine you take. For some treatments, your dentist may plan extra steps or check with your doctor. Do not stop any medicine on your own.

Is your office accessible?

Our Unit 1 entrance is outside the building at street level, so you do not need to go through the lobby. Please call ahead if you use a wheelchair or walker so we can help you settle in.

Can a family member come with me?

Yes. A family member or caregiver is welcome to join you, help share your health history and hear the treatment plan with you.
