Implant-Supported Bridges in North York

When three or more teeth in a row are gone, placing an implant for each one is not always needed. A bridge anchored on two or more implants can span the gap.

Implant-supported bridges in North York at Emerald Forest Dental replace several missing teeth next to each other using a fixed bridge held by two or more implants. The bridge does not rest on your natural teeth. Our dentists plan the number and position of implants after checking your bone, gums and bite.

About implant-supported bridges

An implant-supported bridge works like a traditional bridge, but instead of being held by crowns on natural teeth, it is fixed to implants. For example, two implants can often support a three- or four-tooth bridge. The bridge is screwed or cemented onto the implants and is not taken out at home.

This approach can make sense when a long gap has no healthy teeth at either end to support a regular bridge, or when you would rather not cut down healthy teeth. It can also be less involved than placing one implant for every missing tooth, while still giving a fixed result. Your dentist will look at the length of the gap, the strength of the bone and the forces from your bite, especially if you grind your teeth.

Cleaning under an implant bridge takes some practice. Because the replacement teeth are joined together, regular floss cannot pass between them. Your hygienist will show you how to use floss threaders, interdental brushes or a water flosser to keep the gums under the bridge healthy. Keeping this area clean is one of the most important things you can do to protect the implants.

Who an implant bridge may help

  • You are missing three or more teeth side by side
  • A long gap has no strong natural teeth at either end
  • A traditional bridge would have to span too many teeth
  • You want a fixed option rather than a removable partial
  • A failing bridge on natural teeth needs to be replaced

Benefits

  • Replaces several teeth with fewer implants
  • Stays fixed in place; nothing to take out at night
  • Does not put load on nearby natural teeth
  • Helps restore chewing on that side of your mouth

What to expect

  1. Exam and imagingYour dentist measures the gap and the bone height and width, often using 3D imaging arranged at a nearby imaging centre.
  2. Plan implant positionsWe decide how many implants are needed and where they will support the bridge most securely.
  3. Place the implantsThe implants are placed under local anaesthetic, with grafting added if bone is thin.
  4. Heal with a temporaryWhile the bone bonds to the implants, you may wear a temporary bridge or partial.
  5. Attach the final bridgeYour custom bridge is fitted, the bite is adjusted, and you learn how to clean under it.

Aftercare

  • Clean under the bridge every day with floss threaders, interdental brushes or a water flosser.
  • If you clench or grind, wear a night guard as your dentist advises to protect the bridge and implants.
  • Book regular cleanings so your hygienist can reach areas that are hard to clean at home.

Other options

A removable partial denture can replace several teeth at a lower starting cost. A traditional bridge on natural teeth may work for shorter gaps. In some cases, separate single implants are a better choice. Your dentist will talk through the trade-offs of each.

Cost and coverage

The fee for an implant-supported bridge depends on how many implants and replacement teeth are needed, the bridge material, imaging and any grafting. Fees are set with reference to the ODA suggested fee guide, and your estimate will list each stage separately. Insurance coverage varies, so check your plan's implant and bridge benefits, and if you are covered by CDCP, ask our team how it may apply. Payment plans through LendCare can help you budget.

Our promise: we confirm your coverage and explain the cost before treatment.

Implant-Supported Bridges FAQ

How many implants do I need for a bridge?

Many bridges replacing three or four teeth use two implants, but it depends on the gap, your bone and your bite. Longer spans or heavy biting forces may need more. Your dentist will explain the number planned for you.

Is an implant bridge removable?

No, it is fixed to the implants and stays in place. Your dentist can remove a screw-retained bridge at the office if it ever needs repair or a deep cleaning.

How do I floss under an implant bridge?

You can use a floss threader or special floss with a stiff end to pass under the bridge, or use interdental brushes or a water flosser. Your hygienist will show you which tools suit your bridge.

Can an implant bridge replace a whole arch?

Some fixed options replace all the teeth in one jaw on several implants. These are larger cases that need detailed planning, and parts may be referred out. Ask about implant-supported dentures as well, which can be removable or fixed.

What if I lose bone under the gap?

Bone often shrinks after teeth are lost. Bone grafting may be used to rebuild the area before or during implant placement. Your dentist will review your scans and tell you if grafting is needed.
