About pregnancy dental care

During pregnancy, higher hormone levels change how your gums react to plaque. Many people get pregnancy gingivitis, with gums that are red, puffy and bleed easily, often starting in the second or third month. Some develop a small, raised growth on the gum called a pregnancy tumour. Despite the name, it is not cancer and often shrinks after the baby is born. Morning sickness and cravings for frequent snacks can also raise the risk of cavities and enamel wear.

Dental visits during pregnancy are safe and encouraged. Cleanings, exams and needed fillings can be done at any stage, though many people find the second trimester most comfortable. Local anaesthetic used in dentistry is considered safe in pregnancy. Elective work, like whitening or cosmetic changes, is usually put off until after delivery. X-rays are only taken if they are truly needed, with extra shielding.

Tell us you are pregnant when you book, along with your due date and any medicines or health concerns, such as gestational diabetes or high blood pressure. We can adjust your chair position, keep visits shorter and give you breaks. If you have dental pain or swelling, do not wait until after the baby arrives. An untreated infection is a bigger concern than the treatment itself, and your dentist can coordinate with your doctor or midwife if needed.

Pregnancy Dental Care FAQ

Is it safe to go to the dentist while pregnant?

Yes. Routine cleanings, exams and needed treatment are considered safe during pregnancy. Many people find the second trimester most comfortable for appointments.

Can I have freezing for a filling while pregnant?

Local anaesthetics used in dentistry are considered safe during pregnancy when used in normal amounts. Treating a cavity or infection is usually better than leaving it. Your dentist will choose an appropriate option.

Why are my gums bleeding more now that I am pregnant?

Pregnancy hormones make gums react more strongly to plaque, which causes swelling and bleeding. Keep brushing and flossing gently, and book a cleaning. It often improves after delivery.

Should I avoid dental X-rays?

Routine X-rays are usually postponed. If you have pain or swelling, your dentist may take a needed X-ray with extra shielding, since the dose is very low and finding the problem matters.

When should my baby first see a dentist?

The Canadian Dental Association suggests a first visit within six months of the first tooth coming in, or by age one. You can start wiping your baby's gums with a soft, damp cloth even before teeth appear.
