Fluoride Treatment in North York

Fluoride helps enamel repair itself and resist acid. A quick professional treatment adds a stronger dose than toothpaste alone.

Fluoride treatment in North York at Emerald Forest Dental is a quick coat of fluoride varnish or gel painted on your teeth after a cleaning. It helps harden enamel and can slow or stop very early cavities. It is common for children and is also helpful for adults with dry mouth, sensitive roots or frequent cavities.

About fluoride treatment

Every time you eat or drink something with sugar, the bacteria in plaque make acid that pulls minerals out of your enamel. Saliva helps put those minerals back. Fluoride makes this repair stronger and leaves behind a tougher kind of enamel that holds up better against acid. That is why fluoride toothpaste and Toronto's fluoridated tap water both help protect teeth.

A professional treatment gives a much stronger dose than toothpaste, applied right where it is needed. The most common form is fluoride varnish, a sticky coating painted on with a small brush. It sets quickly when it touches saliva and slowly releases fluoride over several hours. Some offices use a foam or gel in a tray instead. Varnish is popular for young children because very little is swallowed.

Your dentist or hygienist suggests fluoride based on your risk, not age alone. Children whose permanent teeth are coming in often benefit. Adults may benefit too, especially those with dry mouth from medicines, gum recession that leaves roots exposed, braces or aligners, or a history of new cavities. If you have a concern about fluoride, ask us. We are happy to explain how it works and what the research shows.

  • People who get cavities often
  • Adults with dry mouth from medicines or medical treatment
  • Anyone with exposed roots or sensitive teeth near the gum line
  • People wearing braces or clear aligners

Benefits

  • Helps strengthen enamel against acid
  • Can slow or reverse very early white-spot cavities
  • May ease sensitivity on exposed roots
  • Takes only a few minutes at a regular visit

What to expect

  1. Clean and dryYour teeth are cleaned first, then dried with air so the fluoride sticks well.
  2. Apply the fluorideA thin layer of varnish is brushed on, or gel or foam is placed in a tray.
  3. Let it setVarnish sets within seconds; a tray is held in place for a short time.
  4. Simple instructionsYou are told how long to wait before eating and when to brush it off.

Aftercare

  • Wait about 30 minutes before eating or drinking, then stick to soft foods and cool drinks for a few hours.
  • Skip brushing and flossing until the evening or the next morning so the varnish has time to work.
  • Teeth may look slightly yellow or feel fuzzy until the varnish is brushed away; this is normal.

Other options

If you do not want a professional treatment, your dentist may suggest a prescription-strength fluoride toothpaste, a fluoride rinse for older children and adults, or dental sealants on the chewing surfaces of back teeth. Cutting down on sugary snacks and drinks between meals also lowers your risk.

Cost and coverage

Fluoride treatment has a modest fee that is usually added to your cleaning visit, based on the ODA suggested fee guide. Many insurance plans cover it for children, while coverage for adults depends on the plan and sometimes on a written reason from your dentist. Our team can help you check. If your family has Canadian Dental Care Plan coverage, please ask us how it may apply here. For bigger treatment plans, ask us about financing through LendCare.

Our promise: we confirm your coverage and explain the cost before treatment.

Fluoride Treatment FAQ

Is fluoride safe for my child?

Fluoride varnish is widely used for children because only a tiny amount is used and very little is swallowed. Health Canada and the Canadian Dental Association support its use for cavity prevention. Your dentist will choose an amount suited to your child's age.

How often should fluoride be applied?

Many children and higher-risk adults have fluoride every three to six months, often at their cleaning visit. Your dentist or hygienist will suggest a schedule based on your cavity risk.

Do adults need fluoride treatments?

Not all adults do. It is most helpful if you have dry mouth, exposed roots, sensitive teeth, braces or frequent cavities. Ask your hygienist whether it makes sense for you.

Why do my teeth feel sticky after?

Varnish leaves a thin, sticky layer that keeps releasing fluoride for several hours. It wears off with eating and comes off fully when you brush.

Can fluoride fix a cavity?

Fluoride can help harden a very early cavity, which looks like a chalky white spot. Once a cavity has formed a hole in the tooth, it usually needs a filling.
