Dental Implants in North York
An implant replaces the root of a missing tooth, giving a crown, bridge or denture a fixed base in your jaw. It starts with a careful look at your bone, gums and overall health.
Dental implants in North York at Emerald Forest Dental are small posts, usually titanium, placed in the jawbone to support replacement teeth. Our dentists assess your bone with X-rays, and 3D imaging from a nearby imaging centre when needed,, then plan an implant crown, bridge or denture. Healing usually takes a few months before the final teeth are attached.

- Typical time
- Usually three to six months from placement to final teeth; longer if grafting is needed
- Who it's for
- Adults missing one or more teeth with enough healthy bone, or who can have bone added
- Coverage
- Coverage varies widely; some plans pay part, many do not. Check your plan
- Recovery
- Most people return to normal routines in a day or two; the bone heals over a few months
About dental implants
A dental implant has three parts. The implant itself is a screw-shaped post placed in the jawbone, where bone grows tightly around it over time. An abutment connects the post to the tooth above the gum. The final restoration may be a single crown, a bridge spanning several teeth, or a denture that clips or screws onto a few implants.
Not everyone is ready for an implant right away. Your dentist will look at the amount and quality of your jawbone, the health of your gums and your medical history. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, certain medicines and active gum disease can all affect healing. If bone has thinned after a tooth was lost, bone grafting may be needed first. Some complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon or periodontist for part of the treatment.
Implant treatment at our clinic is provided by our dentists. Because an implant is fixed in bone, it does not decay like a natural tooth, but the gums and bone around it can still become infected if they are not kept clean. Daily home care and regular checkups are important to keep the implant healthy for years.
Who implants may help
- You are missing one tooth and want to avoid filing down neighbouring teeth for a bridge
- You are missing several teeth in a row
- Your lower denture moves when you eat or talk
- A tooth is cracked or failing and cannot be saved
- You are in good general health and do not smoke, or are willing to stop during healing
Benefits
- Replaces the tooth root as well as the visible tooth
- Does not rely on cutting down nearby healthy teeth
- Helps keep the jawbone in the area from shrinking
- Feels fixed and stable when chewing
What to expect
- Consultation and imagingYour dentist reviews your health, examines the area and takes X-rays or a 3D scan to measure your bone.
- Treatment planWe explain whether you need extractions or grafting first and what type of tooth replacement is planned.
- Implant placementUnder local anaesthetic, the implant is placed in the bone and the gum is closed over or around it.
- HealingOver a few months the bone bonds to the implant. A temporary tooth may be worn in the meantime.
- Final restorationAn abutment and your crown, bridge or denture are attached and your bite is adjusted.
Aftercare
- For the first few days, eat soft foods, avoid chewing on the implant site and follow your dentist's instructions for rinsing.
- Do not smoke during healing, as smoking raises the risk of the implant not bonding to the bone.
- Once restored, brush and floss around your implant every day and keep your regular cleanings.
Other options
If an implant is not right for you, a fixed dental bridge or a removable partial or complete denture can also replace missing teeth. Each option has different needs for nearby teeth, cleaning and cost. Your dentist will compare them with you honestly.
Cost and coverage
Implant fees depend on the number of implants, the type of crown, bridge or denture, imaging, and whether extractions or bone grafting are needed. We use the ODA suggested fee guide as our reference and give you a written estimate for each stage. Insurance coverage for implants varies a lot, so we encourage you to check your plan, and if you have CDCP coverage, ask us how it may apply. LendCare payment plans can help spread out the cost.
Our promise: we confirm your coverage and explain the cost before treatment.

Dental Implants FAQ
Does getting an implant hurt?
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so most people feel pressure rather than pain during placement. Some soreness and swelling afterward is common for a few days. Your dentist will explain how to manage it and when to call us.
How long do dental implants last?
With good home care and regular checkups, many implants last for many years. The crown attached to it may wear and need replacing at some point. Smoking, grinding and gum infection around the implant can shorten its life.
Am I too old for an implant?
Age alone is usually not the deciding factor. Your general health, bone and ability to heal matter more. Your dentist will review your medical history and medicines to see whether implants are a safe choice for you.
Can I get an implant the same day my tooth is removed?
Sometimes. If the bone and gums are healthy and there is no infection, an implant may be placed at the time of extraction. In many cases it is safer to let the area heal first. Your dentist will advise you after the exam.
Who places implants at your clinic?
Implant treatment at our clinic is provided by our general dentists. Our periodontist may be involved where gum or bone health needs extra care, and some complex cases may be referred outside the clinic. We will tell you who is doing each step.
What is an implant made of?
Most implants are made of titanium, a metal that has been used in medicine for decades because bone bonds well to it. Some people ask about ceramic implants, and your dentist can explain whether they would suit your case.
