Dental Bonding in North York
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin, shaped by hand, to repair small chips, close little gaps or cover a stain, often in a single visit.
Dental bonding in North York is a way to repair or reshape a tooth using tooth-coloured composite resin. At Emerald Forest Dental, your dentist applies the resin, sculpts it and hardens it with a special light. Bonding is often done in one visit, usually needs little or no drilling, and suits small cosmetic fixes.

- Typical time
- About 30–60 minutes per tooth
- Who it's for
- People with small chips, gaps, stains or uneven edges on otherwise healthy teeth
- Coverage

- Recovery
- None; you can eat normally once you leave
About dental bonding
Composite resin is the same kind of material used for tooth-coloured fillings. It starts out soft like putty, so your dentist can add it in thin layers and shape it right on your tooth. A curing light hardens each layer in seconds. The finished surface is then polished to match the shine of your natural enamel.
Because the resin sticks to enamel, your dentist usually only needs to roughen the surface a little. In many cases no freezing is needed. That makes bonding a good first choice when a change is small, such as a chipped corner, a narrow gap between two front teeth, or a white or brown spot that whitening will not remove.
Bonding does have limits. Resin is softer than porcelain, so it can chip if you bite hard objects, and it can pick up stains from coffee, tea or smoking over the years. Most bonding lasts several years before it needs a touch-up, a polish or a full redo. If you plan to whiten your teeth, do it first, because resin keeps the shade it was matched to.
When bonding can help
- A small chip on a front tooth
- A narrow gap between two teeth
- A white, brown or grey spot that whitening has not changed
- A tooth that looks slightly shorter or narrower than its neighbour
- Exposed root surface near the gum line that feels sensitive
Benefits
- Often finished in one visit
- Little or no enamel removed
- Shade is matched to your own teeth
- Can be repaired or added to later
What to expect
- Check and planYour dentist looks at the tooth, makes sure it is healthy and talks with you about the shape you want.
- Choose the shadeA shade guide is held next to your tooth to pick resin that blends in.
- Prepare the surfaceThe enamel is cleaned and lightly roughened, then a bonding liquid is applied.
- Sculpt and hardenResin is added in layers, shaped by hand and hardened with a curing light.
- Polish and check your biteThe tooth is smoothed and polished, and your bite is checked so the bonding is not hit too hard.
Aftercare
- Avoid chewing ice, pen caps or hard candy with bonded teeth.
- Rinse with water after coffee, tea or red wine to cut down on staining.
- Let us know if you feel a rough or sharp edge; small touch-ups are quick.
Other options
For larger changes, or if you want a material that resists stains and chips better, your dentist may suggest porcelain veneers or a crown. If a gap is caused by tooth position, Invisalign may be another option.
Cost and coverage
Bonding fees are based on how many teeth are treated and how much resin each needs, and the ODA suggested fee guide is usually the starting point. When bonding repairs a broken tooth, insurance may treat it like a filling and pay part of it; purely cosmetic bonding is often not covered. If you have CDCP coverage, ask us how it may apply. You can also spread payments out with a LendCare plan.
Our promise: we confirm your coverage and explain the cost before treatment.

Dental Bonding FAQ
Is dental bonding the same as a veneer?
Both cover the front of a tooth, but bonding is resin shaped directly on your tooth in one visit. A porcelain veneer is made in a lab and usually needs some enamel removed. Porcelain resists stains and wear better, while bonding is quicker and easier to adjust.
Will I need freezing?
Often not, since little or no drilling is needed. If the bonding is near a sensitive area or covers a cavity, your dentist may use local anaesthetic. We will tell you before we start.
How long does bonding last?
Many people get several years before needing a touch-up. How long it lasts depends on where it is, your bite and habits like nail biting. Your dentist checks bonded teeth at each checkup.
Does bonding stain?
Resin can pick up stains over time, more than natural enamel or porcelain. Polishing at your cleaning visits helps. Cutting back on smoking and dark drinks also makes a difference.
Can a chipped front tooth be fixed the same day?
In many cases, yes. If the chip is small and the tooth is healthy, bonding can often be done at the same visit as your exam. A larger break may need a different repair.
